Mobile Healthcare Blog | Major ASP Mobile Dictation Solution Milestone—Over 1,000,000 Served
The use of PDAs in healthcare continues to significantly outpace the commercial business market with applications ranging from drug reference tools and clinical consult guides to the more complex solutions including patient care results, dictation, charge capture and e-prescribing.
This explosive adoption is reflected by IQMax’s recent announcement that they have processed over one million medical dictations through their IQAnywhere ASP (application solution provider) platform.
Anywhere, anytime access is a primary benefit to the use of PDAs when accessing clinical information and processing the data captured as the result of a patient encounter. With the IQSpeak dictation solution, physicians select their patient from the inpatient rounds list and/or clinic patient schedule and execute the dictation of the encounter results. The voice files along with the patient demographic data is then synchronized (tethered or wirelessly) to the organizations dictation server or third party transcription service through the IQAnywhere ASP.
While the media used to record dictations has progressed from magnetic tape to digital formats, little has changed to improve the efficiency of the overall process. PDA dictation combined with patient demographic listings and an efficient, reliable, secure synchronization platform is the first advancement in decades that addresses this typically inefficient workflow process.
According to healthcare CIOs, a patient centric healthcare IT solution must be reliably available 7/24/365 and be able to scale to accommodate peaks in performance demands. Combine this high availability and performance requirements with ease of use, simplicity of support and security compliance to meet HIPAA guidelines, and very few PDA suppliers have been able to provide a platform that exceeds these stringent system mandates.
“We designed our ASP platform from the ground up to exceed the demands of the healthcare market”, says Chris Updegraft, VP Engineering and Chief Architect of IQMax. “We included in our architecture a platform with a distributed synchronization model which assures consistent, reliable and fast data syncs for the physicians.”
While most PDA solutions can utilize slow cradle based and infrared conduits to sync the few hundred K and less of data associated with data only applications, dictation files are typically measured in megabytes. IQMax’s platform handles these large files very efficiently and reliably, thousands at a time.
“While we reached this major milestone much earlier than projected, dictation is only one of the many transactions our IQAnywhere ASP handles reliably and securely every hour of every day” Commented Paul Adkison, CEO of IQMax.
The IQMax ASP additionally processes transactions from the suite of IQMax solutions including charges generated through IQCharge™, patient census and schedule lists and automated software updates. The company will also start providing e prescribing and formularies in 2005.
For institutions preferring to manage their own platforms, IQMax has moved their IQAnywhere ASP platform to a premise installable IQEnterprise server. Organizations that are interested in operating the IQMax mobile platform as their own internal ASP can deploy IQEnterprise and benefit from the same reliability and scalability provided with IQAnywhere.
